Rejoicing in Our Present: What Brought You to BBC?
This past summer and fall, in preparation for our Bicentennial, we asked a “Question of the Week.” The first question we asked was: What first brought you to BBC, and what kept you coming back? Here are some of the answers we received.

“I came with my family in the summers when I was young. My grandfather, Gordon Brownville, occasionally preached in the summertime then, and I would occasionally come when my uncle Glenn Abbott was the pastor here before Doug. I can’t remember exactly when, but my cousin, Ellen, started coming frequently, and I did, too, back in the late 1990s, and have been part of the BBC family since then.” ~ Melanie S., member for 18 years

“Back in the early 2000s, I was brought to BBC by a friend at school who was a member of the youth group at the time. I bonded with the youth group kids and kept coming.” ~ Jon A., member for 23 years
“The ‘come as you are’ welcoming. Uplifting music. The need to return to faith and the Bible.” ~ Nancy W., member for 2 years
“Truthfully, I probably wouldn’t have come at all unless my daughter had dragged me here! But all it took was one service… And I was hooked! I knew this was where I belonged!” ~ Pat L., member for 24 years

“Being welcomed! The sense of belonging.” ~ Kerry M., member for 11 years
“My uncle Bishop Covell’s funeral brought me to BBC. Doug Scalise keeps me coming.” ~ Susan B., member for 14 years

“Deacon Ron Calvin and I were both working a temporary job at the Orleans Stop & Shop 27 years ago, and he told me about the great new Pastor they just hired (Pastor Doug Scalise) and would I like to come some Sunday to check out the Church! What kept me coming back was the quaint church, the terrific Choir, and the amazing new Pastor Doug Scalise. Best decision I ever made was to join BBC which I did several months after first walking into the Chapel that Sunday morning.” ~ Linda V., member for 27 years
“God led me to Brewster Baptist one Sunday morning. I was on the Cape alone, working at my family’s home, preparing it for summer rentals. In order to be out with people, I went to breakfast at The Brewster Coffee Shop. When I passed by BBC, I thought, I’d really like to go to service. So, I stopped! I was warmly greeted at the door and loved the artwork/verse at the information desk. That was a great start. Then Doug’s message really spoke to me. After the service I went to Fellowship Hall for coffee and found a bevy of people there having a full breakfast. I sat at a table and was warmly welcomed by parishioners. It was wonderful!! Thereafter, whenever I was on the Cape, I attended on Sunday. When Marvin and I were here together, we came, too. In 2018, we made BBC our church home, and are so glad we did. Everyone has been kind and supportive. We are blessed by the people we have met at Brewster Baptist and are happy to volunteer every chance we get!” ~ Cindy D., member for 6 years

“Knowing that Ron and I were going to move to the Cape, I asked our pastor in Vermont to help me find a good church for us. BBC was at the top of the list. I started at the bottom of the list, and soon we made it to the top. We walked into BBC, and were instantly met by Les Ericson, who made us feel so welcome. After the service, he introduced us to his wife, Carol. We then met Doug, who told us we would meet lots of folks from Harwich. We knew we had found the church we were looking for!” ~ Fran R., member for 18 years
“I came to BBC because my son had been attending Student Ministry activities for several years and wanted to start going to the worship services. I have continued to come because the services are always uplifting, with a great message, and we’ve found a wonderful, supportive community.” ~ Laura M., attending for 6 months
