Who is Jesus and What Does He Offer?

Jesus is one of the most intriguing, interesting, and compelling persons in history. No individual has created more devotion or worship, inspired more art and music, or had a greater influence on human history over the last 2,000 years.

Whether we worship Jesus as God in human form or if you’ve never given Jesus a significant look, there’s much to be gained by learning more about who Jesus is and what he offers.

At Brewster Baptist Church, we’re going to be devoting eight weeks to examining the question Who is Jesus and What Does He Offer, by looking at what Jesus says about himself in the Gospel of John and in the book of Revelation.

Jesus uses a number of powerful images to describe himself and what he offers to people – he is:

  • The Bread that sustains us
  • The Light that illuminates our darkness
  • The Gate that leads to a supportive community
  • The Good Shepherd who guides our steps and protects us
  • The Resurrection and the Life who gives us hope in the face of the power and grief of death
  • The Way that leads to life in all its fullness
  • The Vine from whom we draw our vitality and purpose

In Revelation there is one additional “I am,” saying, “I am the Alpha and the Omega,” the beginning and the end. I invite you to consider joining us on this 8-week exploration as we look at Jesus together.

Our journey begins on Sunday, February 5.

Each week we’ll focus on one of the “I am” sayings of Jesus.

If you’re in a small group or Bible study, I encourage your group to prayerfully consider being a part of this all-church emphasis. There is value in as many of us as possible studying and discussing the same scriptures and themes, and how they influence and transform our lives.

If you’re not yet in a small group, sign up here with your contact information and preferred times to meet so we can place you in a group. I will be looking for individuals who would be willing to lead a new group if we have enough people who’d like to participate who are not yet in a group.

Each week, I’ll provide a participants’ handout and an additional one for the group facilitator that will have more background information to help prepare for the discussion.

A small bibliography for those who would like to read more on their own time about John’s Gospel will be provided.

The daily devotional videos each week will examine the image of that week.

I invite you to prayerfully consider going deeper with your sisters and brothers at BBC as we spend eight weeks together learning more about Jesus and what he offers to everyone of us.

Grace and Peace,
Pastor Doug Scalise
