The Bicentennial Planning Team

Meet the Bicentennial Planning Team

The Bicentennial Planning Team is made up of 9 members: Bill Harwood, Sharon Kautz, Roy Freeman, Nina Gregson, Audrey Smith, Nancy Sveden, Sandra Tubman, Nancy Wallroth and Pastor Doug Scalise.

They met regularly throughout 2023 and will continue through 2024 to plan an exciting Bicentennial year.

They have used this time to reminisce about fun times and important events in the life of Brewster Baptist that will be highlighted, brainstorming events to celebrate this important milestone, researching our history and asking questions of members of the congregation to get a full picture of how BBC has impacted the lives of our congregation and community throughout its history.

Bill Harwood, Co-leader of the Bicentennial Team: Bill, his wife Jane and their two children began attending BBC in 1980 and became members in 1984.  Bill is active in our church as the Deacon Core Ministry Leader, member of the Mission and Outreach Team, the Moderator, and a Worship Welcomer.  He is a retired residential real estate appraiser and enjoys going to visit with his children and five grandchildren.

Sharon Kautz, Co-leader of the Bicentennial Team: Sharon has attended BBC her whole life.  Her mother, Dot Linnell was the church secretary when Sharon was born, so she grew up spending a lot of time here and now attends with her husband Tim and their four children.  Sharon is part of the church office staff, Student Core Ministry Leader, and member of the Mission and Outreach Team.

Roy Freeman: Roy has been a member of BBC for 49 years. He grew up at BBC from childhood and was part of the Youth Group.  He has served as a Sunday School teacher, Trustee and Assistant Treasurer and was a sexton for over 25 years.  He currently serves on the Transportation Team, Caring Cupboard, Financial Counter, and Connecting Team.  He is retired from the Cape Cod Healthcare Accounting Department.

Nina Gregson: Nina has been involved with the church for most of her life.  She grew up in the church attending youth group and being involved with the Sunday School.  As an adult she has volunteered with both the children’s and adult education programs.  She worked with the church library and currently helps out with the Caring Cupboard food pantry and with Heart to Heart.

Audrey Smith: Audrey became a member of BBC in 2005.  She has taught Sunday School, served on the Nominating Team and currently sings on the Praise Team and as part of the Choir.  She has enjoyed being a part of the Women’s Bible Study and volunteering during the Holiday Fair.

Nancy Sveden: Nancy, her husband Ron and their two children began attending BBC in 1974. She had the huge pleasure of serving as Youth Director from 1981 to 2000. It was 19 years of great joy, and her “kids” are now adults, quite a few serving and worshiping here at BBC!! Nancy has always sung, either in the choir or praise team, served as a member of committees (most recently as core leader of the Connecting Team), and organizer of our Information Center (with the amazing scheduling talents of Laurie Paine!) BBC has always been, and will continue to be, her “happy place”.

Sandra Tubman: Sandra has been in this church for 70 years. During this time, she has been a part of Sunday School and youth group.  She taught Sunday School, worked on bake sales, church suppers, rummage sales, and as a member of the “Golden Links” started the strawberry festivals.  She has served on two building committees, several pastoral search teams, in the choir and as a Deacon.  She also instituted a baby-sitting course for the community.  She also preached.

Nancy Wallroth: Nancy became a member of BBC in the fall of 2005. She has participated in several ministries but in 2009, she became a Deacon. As a Deacon she helps at memorial services and is the point person for monthly communion.  She has been a member of the same small group since the spring of 2006. Volunteering at the Holiday Fair is one of her favorite things to do and being part of the Bicentennial Committee is important to her.

Pastor Doug Scalise: His family began their ministry at BBC on October 1, 1995.  Doug is humbled and thankful to be the longest serving pastor in the 200-year history of our congregation.  Doug and Jill feel blessed to have spent so much of their lives here and to have raised their sons, Nathan and Greg in Brewster and at BBC and to see them both now working in ministry.
