Reimagining the Future: Welcoming Smart and Yazel Sabangan
This Easter Sunday, at Brewster Baptist Church, we are excited to welcome Smart and Yazel Sabangan to the waters of baptism at the 10:00 a.m. service.
Smart and Yaz have been together for 11 years and married for 5 years.
They have a very smart and talented 4-year-old son named Ysaiah, who was dedicated here at BBC in 2020.
Yaz shared that “Smart and I had different religions when we met. He is a Catholic and I am a Baptist. Despite that, we never disagree, argue, nor criticize each other’s religion, but respect each other’s beliefs.”

They were each born and raised in the Philippines, where Smart worked in IT and Yaz was an Electronics Engineer.
Yaz’s mom had moved to the Cape and has been a loyal worker at Hot Chocolate Sparrow since 2008.
Yaz shared that “This became the way for our family to have our permanent residency here in the US. The owners of the Chocolate Sparrow agreed to sponsor our papers while we work for them. So Smart and I left our jobs and flew over here and started working for the Sparrow in July of 2016. A decision we would never regret.”
Yaz had been an active member in their church in the Philippines and she also helped in their ministry as much as she could, and, up until now, has still supported their ministry financially and through prayers.
As time passed by, in 2018, Yaz became eager to look for a church here on Cape Cod to attend.
She asked each one of their co-workers at the Sparrow, and at other jobs she had, which churches they go to.
They answered different churches, some don’t go to church (which was sad to her), some of them just went wherever.
Then, only one of them, named Patricia, told her about Brewster Baptist, and she was the only person who invited her to come with her to church.

Patricia invited Yaz to come to a Sunday service at 8:30 a.m. That’s when she started to know of BBC, and Yaz invited her family to come with her after that Sunday.
Since then, Smart, Yaz, and their family have become regular attenders of BBC, and have been getting more involved with the ministries of the church.
Smart regularly volunteers in the kitchen during breakfasts, and we will be blessed to hear Yaz share a solo next Sunday, April 7 during the 10:00 a.m. worship service.
Yaz is also a great example of sharing her faith with others and is constantly sharing about BBC on social media. We are thankful to have them be a part of our BBC family!
