And this is where you can find the Verse of the Day.

“Be still and know that I am God! I am exalted among the nations, I am exalted in the earth.” Psalm 46:10

With Ash Wednesday falling on February 26 and Holy Week beginning April 5, most of the season of Lent this year falls in the month of March. Lent is the 40 days, not counting Sundays, from Ash Wednesday to Palm Sunday.

Many Christians traditionally engage in a discipline of abstinence or two during the season of Lent such as some type of fasting from food or setting aside time for solitude or silence.

It can also be helpful to take up a discipline of engagement in Lent and this year I want to encourage you to take up the challenge of doing some more Bible reading than you may typically do.

It’s amazing how a daily discipline can build over a month whether that habit is a form of exercise, saving money, or reading the Bible or another book.

This is what I’m encouraging us to do: read 3 chapters in a Gospel every day. Begin with Mark, which is the oldest of the gospels and the first to be written down. After Mark, read through Matthew and Luke, and finish with John, which was the last to be written and has less in common with the other three gospels.

In addition to reading in a Gospel, read five Psalms a day. You can divide these up and read two or three in the morning and two or three in the evening.

It’s in the Psalms that we learn to pray and worship the Lord.

While we speak of the Bible as the Word of God, the Book of Psalms is unique among all the books of scripture because it is the words of people to God and we hear prayers of lament and praise, of trust, thanksgiving, and wisdom, as worshipers bring the full range of human emotion and experience from the highest joy to the deepest sorrow to God.

Finally, read a chapter in Proverbs a day to correspond to the day of the month. So, on March 1st, read Proverbs 1, on March 2, Proverbs 2, and so on.

Proverbs has a great deal of practical life wisdom and speaks to many areas including our speech, temper, self-control, compassion for the poor, and avoiding unhealthy habits that lead to ruined lives and relationships.

Reading five psalms a day, you can read the entire Book of Psalms from Psalm One’s invitation to meditate on God’s word and to follow the way of the righteous all the way to Psalm 150’s closing crescendo of praise.

Reading a chapter in Proverbs a day in March you’ll cover all 31 chapters.

Finally, one will read through all four gospels and get to know Jesus: his teaching, values, the way Christ treats and regards people, how we’re to live as his followers, and what the Lord did for us in his suffering, death, and resurrection.

As we focus on Love, Grow, Share at BBC, this month’s reading challenge is an opportunity to grow in reading and obeying God’s Word.

I hope you’ll join me!

Grace and Peace,

Pastor Doug Scalise
