Preserving Our Past, Building Our Future
The Goal – Stepping out in Faith
On December 23, 1824, thirty two people signed their names on a covenant and committed themselves and their resources to founding Brewster Baptist Church. They stepped out in faith and created a church.
Our goal 190 years later, as we move toward our Bicentennial in 2024, is to preserve and strengthen that same church… our vitality, programs, facilities and the good work we do locally and globally.
Preserving Our Past, Building Our Future
Doug Scalise, Brewster Baptist Church
Consultant Bill Easum has given us his recommendations on what we need to do so that BBC can remain as healthy in the future as we are today – from renovating the building structure to adding staff so we have a 1 to 100 ratio of pastoral/program staff to attendees, as well as additional outreach endeavors. Bill told us that implementing these recommendations required a significant investment which is why we are having the “Preserving our Past and Building our Future” Campaign Fund.
Fifteen years ago, the people of BBC gave over $2,400,000 to construct the facility we all enjoy today. Now it is our turn to help BBC move into the future once again. Our goal is to raise $500,000 in donations from BBC members and friends over the next year.

The success of this campaign will significantly impact not only those of us who currently find BBC so meaningful, but also so many people who will be touched by the ministry of our congregation and staff. We all cannot make the same size gift, but we all can give sacrificially to help BBC meet our goal. We’re asking you to step out in faith and help us make this era in our history another defining moment for Brewster Baptist Church.
Our Plan – Preserving our Past
Extensive building renovations are underway on the oldest part of the church that was constructed more than 150 years ago. The renovations are necessary to correct structural and foundation damage caused by water leakage and insects, to remove lead paint and to maintain the stability of the building. Modern, long lasting construction materials are being used and new insulation will make the chapel more energy efficient.
Additionally, a beautiful new steeple more closely resembling the original that was destroyed by fire will be installed and new landscaping will enhance the entrance to the church and the appearance of the church on historic 6A.
Building our Future
Implementing the recommendations of the Easum Master Report which includes in part:
- Beginning a third worship service to reach more people and increase attendance.
- Hiring David Pranga as Executive Pastor, to oversee Operations and Finances, supervise the staff, and make sure there is alignment among all our ministries. This will free Pastor Doug to focus on outreach to the community and growing our membership as we continue to share the love of God in practical ways here on Cape Cod and beyond.
- Hiring Barbara Burrill as Pastor of Children and Student Ministries to focus on growing our ministry with Children, and to oversee the areas of Students and Parents.
- Investing in various means of outreach to help us significantly increase the number of first time and returning guests coming to BBC.

How Do I Decide How Much to Give?
This is our first special fund raising campaign in over ten years and its success is crucial to the future of our church. We hope to have the support of every individual and family, as God leads each one of us, in order to preserve our past and build our future here at Brewster Baptist Church. Not everyone can give the same amount, but everyone can give and we want everyone to feel they had a part in what the Lord is going to do in our midst. Please pray about your gift and ask God to guide you in your pledge commitment. Please give as much as you can and help us reach our goal of $500,000; don’t give until it hurts…give until it feels good.
Why are we seeking to raise $500,000?
- Building restoration, our beautiful new steeple and the enhanced landscaping costs are $475,000.
- Fully implementing the Easum recommendations and programs, including incremental salary support for the new Pastor’s over the next four years (until increased attendance/giving catches up with expenses) is estimated to be between $325,000 and $425,000.
- These costs are reduced by our $200,000 Town Community Preservation Grant and assumed grants from the Eddy Foundation.
- Resulting in the belief that $500,000 from members and friends will be enough to allow us to fully implement our plan.

Ways to Give During the Campaign
It is important to know there are numerous ways in which you can make your campaign gift. As you consider your commitment, please review the following options. We hope this information will assist you in your decision making.
- Completing the pledge card would be most helpful if returned by August 31st.
- Payments against the pledges can be made up front (most helpful) or paid monthly, quarterly or semi-annually up until the end of August 2015.
- Payments should be clearly identified as “Campaign Fund” so as not to be confused with normal annual giving.
- Payments may be made by cash, check or through our online giving using the Church website.
- Gifts of appreciated stock may be advantageous as the giver avoids the Capital Gains Tax.
- All gifts are, of course, fully tax deductible.
