For our daily Bible reading in April we have selections from four types of books we find in the Bible:

  1. Gospels
  2. the First Letter of Paul to the Thessalonians
  3. Psalms
  4. the Prophet Isaiah

Each of these represents a different type or genre of writing that we find in the Bible.

Here is a printable list of the readings, calendar-style: April 2020 Daily Reading

The Gospels are about the life, ministry, teaching, death, and resurrection of Jesus.

In the first 12 days of April we will read all four Gospel accounts of Jesus’ final week from his entry into Jerusalem through the stories of Easter and the other appearances of the risen Christ. We will be reading these leading up to and through Holy Week which begins April 5 and ends with Easter on April 12.

Thessalonians. Then on April 13 we will begin reading 1 chapter a day in 1 Thessalonians which is probably the earliest of all the writings in the New Testament. Paul likely was in Corinth when he wrote it in the early 50’s. Our Worship series starting after Easter is Leading a Life Worthy of God based on 1 Thessalonians so reading through the book three times, one chapter at a time, will help familiarize you with what will be our focus for nine weeks.

Psalms. Because we’re living with the uncertainty and grief of the Covid 19 pandemic, I’m returning to the Book of Psalms, the prayer and hymn book of the Bible, for another month.

Some of you read through Psalms in March and if you’ve never read through a book of the Bible consecutively, you will be amazed how much more familiar the book will seem and you’ll notice things you didn’t see the first time.

Isaiah. Finally, we’ll be reading the longest prophetical book in the Bible – the prophet Isaiah.

The three books from the Hebrew Bible that are quoted or referred to the most in the New Testament are Isaiah, Deuteronomy, and Psalms.

Reading through the four Gospel accounts of Jesus’ suffering, death, and resurrection, and reading Isaiah, you will notice many verses and passages in Isaiah that make you think of Jesus.

This is the sort of thing the earliest Christians did, they searched their scriptures to try and discern connections between what God had done and said in the past that connected with Jesus and what he said and did and what happened to him.

You may do any combination of the reading you wish, so select what you’d like to do based on how much time you have and what you’d like to learn.

I hope this will be a beneficial spiritual exercise for you. I pray you’ll be blessed, challenged, comforted, and encouraged as you read and reflect on God’s Word.
