Rejoicing in Our Present: Sexton Staff

As we continue highlighting aspects of our past, present and future at Brewster Baptist Church, we hope you enjoy learning new things about the life of BBC. This week, we want to introduce the people who work – mostly behind the scenes – to make BBC a beautiful and comfortable place – our Sexton staff.

BBC has a Facilities Manager, two part-time Sextons, and two long-time BBC members who join in when needed to make sure BBC is clean, attractive, and well-maintained.

Our Sexton team works hard each day to make all the events at BBC happen – including set-up, clean-up, and being available as needed. They regularly work hand-in-hand with volunteers from our Buildings and Grounds Team, Meditation Garden Team, Community Life and Fellowship, and other ministries, to keep our church facilities, parsonages, property surroundings, and ministries functioning beautifully for our congregation and community. We currently have an opportunity for an additional person to join this important team as well!

Tom Swaida, Facilities Manager

Tom moved to the Cape from Kingston, NY, when he was eight years old. He graduated from Dennis-Yarmouth High School and loved riding his Honda CR125R Motocross dirt bike. After completing his English degree at UMass-Dartmouth, he worked as a Manager at Shaw’s Supermarket, where he met his wife, Sylvia. She is originally from Ecuador, but immigrated to the US when she was 18. They have three daughters: Kylie (11), Sophie (9), and Skylar (5 ½), who will be attending VBS at BBC later this summer. Tom and his family live in their home in Marstons Mills, where he recently built a treehouse for his daughters. The family enjoys swimming in their pool, biking, and playing arcade games. Tom enjoys sharing his faith and has been instrumental in establishing a CCD program for his church.

For the past nine years, Tom has managed the physical operation of BBC, with his calm, pleasant manner – but aways has a twinkle in his eye. He works closely with the Buildings & Grounds Committee, as well as the Meditation Garden team. He manages facility maintenance, BBC’s events, and outside requests for use of our facilities. Tom also works closely with Pastor Doug and Sharon Kautz creating the daily devotional videos.

Chuck Hilton, Sexton

Born in Worcester, MA, Chuck grew up in Provincetown and graduated from Provincetown High School before registering for the Army. His Army career sent him to Louisiana for training before a   1-year assignment to Vietnam, where he was awarded a Purple Heart. After completing his tour of duty in Colorado, he returned to Provincetown, earned Associate degrees in Accounting and Hotel and Restaurant Management at Cape Cod Community College, and worked at the Provincetown Inn. He became a Christian 45 years ago when a friend led him to the Lord while attending CCCC. In 2015, Chuck met his wife, Linda, on eHarmony, while she was struggling with pancreatic cancer. They were married by Marie Sherman and had wonderful years together. Sadly, she lost her battle with cancer in 2018. In his spare time, Chuck enjoys cooking and playing softball. He was an avid candlepin bowler for 35 years and is also a numismatic (coin collector)!

Chuck has been at BBC for 22 years. He is the quiet, smiling guy, who you see making sure Sunday morning coffee hours go smoothly, and tending to supplies throughout the church. He is also working throughout the week doing building maintenance and event set-ups.

Jason Lussier, Sexton

Born in Falmouth, Jason was raised and educated in Plymouth. He started working in landscaping in ninth grade and enjoys working outside. In 1998, Jason moved back to the Cape with Carmela, his partner of 25 years. Jason has a daughter, Kimberly, and four grandchildren, who he loves spoiling. In his spare time, he likes to watch sports or trout fish at Flax Pond, especially in the winter. He also likes to serve as Carmela’s prep cook, and is especially excited to cheer for the USA Women’s Soccer Team or the Portugal Men’s Soccer Team.

Jason has been attending BBC for more than 10 years. He volunteered on the Buildings & Grounds team before becoming a part-time Sexton in March of 2023. Jason says he is grateful and blessed to work at BBC. While working outside, he prays for various friends who are struggling. He says he always looks forward to coming to work.

Roy and Lisa Freeman

Roy and Lisa are long-time members of BBC.

Roy has been part of BBC for all of his 63 years.  He was a Sexton from 1980-2006.

His wife, Lisa, heads up the Caring Nurses, helping to coordinate monthly blood pressure clinics, COVID vaccinations, and the Red Cross Blood Drives.

Together, Roy and Lisa make sure our First Aid Kits and AED Machines are updated and restocked throughout the church and continue to help by filling in as needed.

Part-time Employment Opportunity at BBC

If this seems like a fun team to work with, IT IS! If you would be interested in joining this team, BBC is seeking a part-time Sexton to help cover evening and weekend events, as needed. This position involves making coffee; setting up tables, chairs, and a projector for events; assisting event organizers; and cleaning up. Basic cleaning duties include vacuuming, changing trash, cleaning restrooms, cleaning glass doors, mopping floors and basic maintenance inside and outside. The ability to climb a ladder and lift 50 pounds is required. Flexibility and dependability of schedule to cover events is a must.
